The Civil War: The Overland Campaign
In the spring of 1 , Grant was given command of all Union forces and ordered by Lincoln to end the war. Grant arrived outside Fredericksburg, VA where an anxious 2 awaited him. 2 thought that he was going to be replaced like all the commanders of the Army of the Potomac had been in the past. However, Grant kept 2 as the commander, but made his headquarters with the Army. Grant ordered 3 to attack 4 and all Union armies to commence an immediate invasion wherever they were. For Grant, that meant 5 and facing 6 .
In the first major engagement, Grant hoped to use the 7 to mask his army's movements. However, 6 anticipated this and attacked him while he was vulnerable. However, Grant was able to close in on 6 's army, since it was also trapped in the 7 . Part of Grant's army somehow broke through 6 's center and made it to the army headquarters. 6 himself was about to lead a counterattack when friendly soldiers came up in support. " 6 to the rear!" they chanted and moved their beloved General 6 out of harm's way while they surged forward to stop Grant. This surprise flank attack was commanded by the trusty General 8 who had just arrived from the Chattanooga Campaign in time to save 6 's army from destruction. However, in the confusion of the 7 , 8 was shot by his own men.
Defeated by 6 , everyone expected Grant to retreat. Instead, Grant ordered an immediate advance out of the 7 and towards 9 , the Confederate capital. 6 was forced to follow. He sent his famous and prideful cavalry general, 10 , to stop Grant. 10 was killed and yet managed to slow Grant long enough for Lee to reach Spotsylvannia Courthouse. There, he realized that 8 had been correct all along and commanded his troops to dig entrenchments...
